Marbles, a brief history:

Marbles and marble games come from ancient Roman times. It was common for bags of nuts and marbles to be given as gifts during Saturnalia (winter solstice), which was the precursor to Christmas. The game of marbles was very popular with Roman children, especially during Saturnalia.

Marbles at that time were made from stone, pottery or glass. The term “marble” was not used in Britain until marbles fashioned from marble stone began to be imported from Germany in the late 17th century.

Marble or French Solitaire: a brief history:

One popular legend holds that the game of Solitaire was invented by Pelisson, a French mathematician, to entertain Loius XIV  -known as “Roi Soleil” (Sun King). Another legend says that a French nobleman who was a prisoner in the Bastille devised the game. Both of these albeit attractive legends are in doubt since Ovide, a Roman writer, wrote about the game and described it in his book "Ars Amatoria" which was published in 1 B.C. People in Europe actually rediscovered Solitaire around the XIIth century with a game called "Al-qirq" (the mill, in Arabic), which later became the game of "Alquerque" .
